I'm not even sure of the precise terminology to use, but I'm looking for
something to register the number of times a file is downloaded. I've seen
such things online at a number of places, but can anyone advise me where I
might acquire one?

| (...) well, if you have access to the server logs, it's just a matter of counting the lines that requested the file counted. if you don't have access, you'll have to write a small CGI that will serve the file, after incementing a counter.
