I'd like to upgrade my MacOS 8.6 to MacOS 9, or perhaps X if it's
compatible with iBook, which I believe it is not.

Will an upgrade erase everything on my harddrive? (like reformatting?)
Or do I just launch the installation app, install, restart, and voila
-OS9 with all my programs and files left?

What about applications that run under 8.6, will they still run under 9?

A silly question perhaps, but I've never upgraded before.
