Penguin Computing looks good to me (although I admit we've only got a couple
of systems from them here so I don't have much personal experience with them
a company). You can get a minimal-but-decent system for under $1000.
Digging in the internals is always fun, of course. And you certainly
wouldn't have to go down to the ic level, let alone the internals thereof.
