Penguin Computing looks good to me (although I admit we've only got a couple
of systems from them here so I don't have much personal experience with them
a company). You can get a minimal-but-decent system for under $1000.

Digging in the internals is always fun, of course. And you certainly
wouldn't have to go down to the ic level, let alone the internals thereof.

I've decided I need another hobby, so I'd like to get a cheap-but-decent Intel compatible system to run Linux on. Problem is, I have no clue what the market for such systems is like. Some background on myself: I own several Macs at home, and have (...) (24 years ago, 31-May-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)
