As far as I am concerned, Larry P can go to...
...Clement Street and score amazing Japanese candy and cookies from
Tokyo-Ya. Stuff Like: Krunky, Melty Kiss, Kittyland, and Everyburger (why
eat only one when only Everyburger will do?). The Jumbo Daifuku is not to
be missed. A company called Meiji makes all kinds of good stuff without
translated names -- one candy looks like banana shaped M&Ms that actually
tastes like bananas and chocolate, another looks like chocolate mushrooms
(this one has a box with a crying bear and a smiling bunny).
...also on Clement Street are some amazing Dim Sum to go places. Across
from Green Apple books there is a shop that sells a "Combination" steamed
bun with chicken, black mushroom, egg, green onion, pork, and chinese
sausage inside it. Another street down going west there's another place
that has the best baked BBQ Pork buns ever.
...one street north on California there is a Burmese food restaurant called
Mandalay. It's SO good. The string beans with fish flakes and a smoky
hoisin sauce (probably?) is not to be missed.
...in the Noe Valley, Larry should go to Sanchez where he will find Alice's
restaurant. Think of it as chinese food "nouveau". It's hard to explain
but the spices are not standard chinese food style. The only thing to avoid
is the bird's nest unless you know it's very fresh. I hate stale fried
stuff and I think they may make the bird's nests in advance.
...in the Castro Larry P should go Nirvana and order the Folkanese noodle
soup with chicken. Don't accept only the tiny portion of daikon and carrot
salad they serve as an appetizer, but order a whole bowl instead. They also
have a bread and onion appetizer that is sure to please with the sauces it
is served with (I think one has coconut milk). Yum!
...if Larry were to swim to the East Bay, then he should go to either Uzen
in Oakland, or Kamakura in Alameda for Sushi. I prefer the latter. The Uni
is excellent and the meal is topped off with an exquisite complimentary plum
wine.
...also in the East Bay is the amazing dive mexican restaurant La Pinata. I
would order the "burrito famoso carne asada" with the rice and beans served
on the side (not inside the burrito!). You end up with an all meat burrito
slathered in baked enchilada sauce and cheese, with rice and beans on the
side. The flan is also not at all bad.
...and if none of this appeals, Larry can go to In-and-Out in Daly City and
read the bible quotes on the food wrappers and paper cups. Better fries are
impossible, but avoid the shakes.
