Hey Y'all:
Just a quick note here to mention the release of the DVD "Legend Ultimate
Edition." U.S. fans of this previously deeply flawed film should prick up
their virtual ears and take note that this release is actually 2 discs in
one and all for a mere $19 USD. The first disc is a director's cut that is
so vastly different from the film I am familiar with that I almost can't
believe the degree of difference -- Mia Sara sings, Jerry Goldsmith scores,
and 30 minutes worth of other differences besides. While the story is never
truly complex, there's a lot more meat hanging on the bones of almost every
character which thereby lends more weight to the story itself. Darkness is
slowly unveiled during the course of the film, and this alone makes the film
more interesting -- as if one were entering more deeply into a bad dream. At
times more sophisticated, the film is also more innocent and childlike. Only
three significant flaws remain: "Big D", "Adios, Amigos", and those crazy
shaky horns (but what could they have done instead and still keep the
headgear light enough for a human being to wear on his head?) -- these are
things that break the fourth wall and thereby detract from the viewing
experience, so I figured I'd mention them. Otherwise, I'd give this movie a
9 of 10 recommendation.
Like all DVDs of its kind, there are tons of extras. The first disc is
replete with Scott's overlaid commentary, while disc two features the
original (terrible) U.S. release, the standalone Tangerine Dream soundtrack
(why couldn't it be "Thief"? -- a much better score), an hour length "making
of" documentary, storyboards, etc.
Just pop it in and pretend you never saw the U.S. release. It's very much
worth the price of admission.
Do I have to mention that the movie is loaded with mythological references?
Not too much to see in the way of Castles, but lots of inspiration for
Castle characters and ideas. Anyway, just this note here -- take any more
to off-topic please.

Yes, there are many differences between the Directors Cut and the US Release, but I won't tell everyone to forget the US Release. Reasons why? Of (...) The additional scenes in the Director's Cut don't really add much to the film, and Jerry Goldsmith's score, while very nice, does not convey (...) (22 years ago, 3-Jun-02, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)
