Hey Y'all:
I heard this yesterday on the news, and now I have found a reference to it
on the web: http://www.theonering.net/perl/newsview/2/1011048982#maincontent
So yeah, it seems as if LOTR may see a director's cut release to DVD which
adds 1 1/2 hrs. to the length of the movie, for a final length of 4 1/2 hrs.
-- plenty of time for greater depth in character development which I think
the film sorely needs. Release date should be somewhere in the May-Aug 2002
range.
I'd still have to see the movie, but since character depth was my only
significant sticking point, at 4 1/2 hrs. it may become the best film ever
made. I know several people in the real world who are not even Tolkien fans
that already feel this way about the theatrical release.
I am just glad that LOTR is setting a new standard in fantasy films -- the
likes of which SW and HP have no hope of competing against. I think only a
sprawling Lynch version of the "Dune" series might have done better -- but
as usual, the production company did not trust the director to give us his
more replete vision of the thing. And with two semi-murky versions of Dune
already in the can we are not likely to see more of them. [Yes, I am one of
these peopel that thinks Lynch's Dune was pretty amazing even given it's
failings.]
