I use Redhat 5.1.  I played with Slackware a long time ago.  I don't
know enough about the pros and cons of different distrobutions to even
begin to advise someone.

I do know, however, of a cheap place to get it if you don't want to
bother with ftp'ing a few hundred megs.

Now sure, I could ftp everything on the 1.99 redhat 5.1 CD I got from
them down to my machine at work easily.  In fact, more easily than
most since sunsite.utk.edu is right across the street from me.  Then I
could burn all that on a CD, a CD I paid a buck for.  But it would
take a while, and I'd have to fiddle with directories and junk like
that.  Much better to pay the $6 or so including shipping to get a CD
that I pop into my drive after fdisking and wiping out all partitions,
then run autoboot.exe.

I had Linux installed and networking up and running in under 30
minutes, I'd say.  Not bad for a novice.

And you don't have to choose between X and CLI.  You get both at the
same time, in a much more real way than Windows/dos prompts ever
provided.

I'm currently playing with X-windows windows managers and such.  FVWM2
comes with Redhat and it's ok.  I installed and setup KDE yesterday.
Probably going to try Gnome sometime this week.  If I understand
things correctly I can use any single one I want at any time, not just
one forever.

My cjc account still uses FVWM2.  Another account I have on the box
uses KDE.  I'll make another for Gnome.
