I don't have any images, but I have been watching the live, raw
feed from the FOX satellite in the Learning Resource Center (which
has a huge satellite dish on top). The stuff you're seeing on
websites and on the TV are quite edited--some of the stuff I have
seen is, well, nauseating. I can't find any other word to describe
it. People with horrific injuries who somehow made it out of the
sub-basements of the Towers or were in the neighborhood when it fell,
and who are absolutely covered in burns and soot. They haven't
been able to get into the immediate center of the carnage, so
we didn't see any images of the dead--but if this is what the
people who were ambulatory enough to get away, I shudder to think
of those who weren't. The debris shots and the emergency crews
who have just been overcome materially or emotionally just took
the wind right out of me. This is all unfolding not 30 miles away
from me--I was able for a while to see the plumes of smoke!
There are several warships headed for New York, presumably to "show
the flag" and to help in rescue and evacuation efforts. Apparently
they're also pulling people from all over NJ and Eastern PA to help
with medical teams--even veterinarians (!!). However, those of us
(like me) who have expressed interest in helping who are not medical
professionals have been told to hold off because there is, apparently,
a real surfeit of able and willing volunteers in Manhattan already
(one of the few really heartening pieces of news I've seen today).
What they say about New Yorkers having hearts of gold really appears
to be true.
While coverage has been much more balanced than with OKC, I've been on
campus here and hearing *open* hostility towards "Arabs" writ large
from some of the undergrads at the Commons and down at the coffee shop.
So it begins--one of my advisor's Muslim students has already called
to say that she won't be in for the rest of the week, citing "personal
safety." I hope people keep their heads about this, but it's already
proving difficult--I'm as outraged as anyone at the images I've seen.

| (...) In my afternoon class my only absence was a student of Middle Eastern background. Perhaps it was only coincidence, but it is quite possible he didn't feel secure about coming to school today.
