Tomorrow is Pearl Harbor Day (Remember the Arizona!)

It's always an important day for we navalists.  Today I
read, however, that Bob Ballard (he of _Titanic_ and _Yorktown_
fame) is going hunting for the Japanese midget sub that USS Ward
sank at about 0630 the morning of 7 december--yep, *before* the
attack.  Good luck, those things were tiny, and one good ashcan
from the Ward wouldn't have left much.

There's also a very interesting book out about the Arizona, from
its 'birth' in 1916 to today.  Most interesting is the post-PH
stuff, like what happened to the turrets (removed from the hull
in 1942 and mounted as batteries on the western side of Oahu)
and conservation of the hull, which is in danger of collapse
and still contains an awful lot of fuel oil that leaks slowly
   into Pearl Harbor...

   best
