What's X-Mimeole?
I don't know but it sounds kind of dirty.

You're pretty close to the mark, Eric.

An X-Mimeole (as opposed to a plain old mimole, but more on that in a later
installment) was a gaffer's tool used on the soundstage during the filming
of, shall we say, films of ill repute.  Those living in Baltimore during the
late 1920's might remember a scandal, surrounding one Hollywood producer Joe
Kennedy and his actress sweetheart, which involved an X-Mimeole, a cup of
gelatin, and an intoxicated weasel.  (Incidentally, it was this series of
events which was eventually the seed for the Richard Gere / gerbil
connection.)

After Kennedy and clan were chased out of town, the first law concerning
X-Mimeoles was enacted in Maryland.  In 1943, Wisconsin became the last
state in the Union to make the usage of X-Mimeoles illegal.  There was a
temoporary but flourishing black market for X-Mimeoles (some say Joe Kennedy
was behind it), but it was nowhere to be found by the beginning of the
Korean War in 1950 due to a complete sense of apathy towards the illicit
device.

The usage -- indeed, the concept -- of an X-Mimeole was almost completely
absent since that time, with two notable exceptions:  In 1967, anti-war
activist Marla O'Keefer broke through Secret Service barriers and waved one
in the face of President Johnson during a press conference.  (Good ol' LBJ
was said to have enjoyed the experience, much to the shock and dismay of his
mother, who was present.)  And, some time during the Browser Holy Wars of
1995 to the present, Microsoft has dug up the old reference and stuffed it
into the e-mail headers generated by their software, as yet another subtle
but obscene snub to their customers.

It's not pretty, I know.  But you asked.

Cheers,

(...) I don't know but it sounds kind of dirty. (...) Arn't we all Microsoft-induced? (...) If it were a MIME message we would all want to smack it and say "Just tell me what you want and take off that silly face paint!" Eric K. Remove ".nospam" (...)
