I think you are wrong. Dan owes nobody a reason. Dan does not NEED to
explain why he runs his site the way he does. And people are going to
think what they want to no matter what is said.. proof of that is already
easy to see.
|
If he doesnt explain himself and continues to run his business (1) like a
crazed dictator than other users may worry that continued investment in
BrickLink is not going to yeild returns.
|
I have a lot of respect for Dan and what he does at BL, to call him a
crazed dictator is silly.
|
Examples - Ive been pondering
re-opening my Bricklink store, but I dont want to do all the work
necessary, if at some random moment, Dan may decide to boot me. Also as a
customer, I have completely sworn off some stores (2) due to their business
practices, if they cannot treat the customer in a professional manner, than
Ill take my money elsewhere. Alas there isnt a real viable alternative to
BL right now.
|
...because Dan saw a simple idea which he invested his time and cash in.
Anyone else could have done the same (e.g Todd), but only Dan actually had
the gumption to do it. Bricklink has revolutionised some aspects of this
hobby; for that Dan deserves your thanks - not your contempt!
|
Dan deserves quite a bit of thanks for what hes done. However, unlike many
sites, BL was created as a business venture rather than a totally benevolent
effort. People pay Dan to list their wares, theyre buying a service. If Dan
knows whats good for his business, he should (theoretically) resolve
disputes and issues with his good-faith customers amicably.
|
Even when a seller deliberately continues to break the ToS, and as a result
potentially disenfranchises buyers?
|
Fortunately for Dan (but arguably unfortunately for Lar and others in the
community who have clashes with him) he has a monopoly on this type of
brickshop site. Sure, you can argue that there are other places to sell LEGO
online -- but *none* that come close to comparing with the power and features
of BL. Anyways, the point being - Dan is free to run his site *like* a crazed
dictator (not calling him one, but likening actions) and not see the
immediate consequences of lost customers to a close competitor. However, this
action may prove far more damaging to his business in the long run should
disgruntled customers decide to compete.
|
Perhaps somebody should compete? One could argue that BL is too big now, and
that a basic sets only or minifig only facility on LUNGET, Brickset or
Peeron (linked to their respective set databases) may be viable?
