The Economist periodically does in depth studies of various topics. In this
weeks edition, they have done a series of articles about the United States of
America.
I found it to be quite interesting reading:

You may or may not agree with their perspectives or their conclusions but I
think you will find it interesting as well.
I believe you do not have to be a subscriber to read this survey, at least at
the present (6 November 2003) time. At some time in the future, that may change.
