I read this the other day:

The warning was plain. Iraq was a breeding ground of terror, an incubator for al-Qaida and a clear and present danger to “the civilised world”. Tony Blair was wary of that argument, but George Bush made it the heart of his case. At his eve-of-war press conference back in March, the president cast the coming attack as the next step in a story that had begun on September 11 2001. Iraq was providing “training and safe haven to terrorists, terrorists who would willingly use weapons of mass destruction against America and other peace-loving countries”. The irony is that, at the time, this was not true. But it is now.

But now it looks like Bush Jr can’t even clear up his own mess; instead he’s sending Powell cap-in-hand to the UN to beg for support. It’s all a bit different to when Powell attended the UN in February:

Powell: My second purpose today is to provide you with additional information, to share with you what the United States knows about Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction as well as Iraq’s involvement in terrorism…

Bush Jr (in the UK): Time is short. This is a chance for the Security Council to show its relevance, and I believe the Security Council will show its relevance because Saddam Hussein has not disarmed…

… and all of a sudden the UN is relevant again! But not because of the huge (and mounting) civilian death toll, or the daily attacks on US troops and certainly not because of the complete chaos which prevails in Iraq. Powell is being sent with a begging bowl as Bush Jr can’t find the $$ to clear up his own mess.

Is there any chance that Bush Jr will extend this new found sense of community and shared responsibility to those in need within the US; or do they have to take responsibility for their own predicament?

Rarebit induced insomnia... Scott, you know the answers already -- this is all rhetorical... Shrub cannot find the dollars because he has doubled the annual national deficit, approx. half of which will be needed to support the occupation. No one (...)
