Arg.  Lastworditis.  My point:  science is a form of religion.

Bull. Unless you mean it's a form that has hypotheses (how DO you
pluralise that?) and theorems that can be verified and that can predict
useful things.

I saw this, and got intreuged... Maybe this has been covered in another thread
of this debate (LMK if so), but I have a question... What defines a religion?

Is it having faith in an ultimate source? If this kind of faith defines a
religion, I don't think I have a problem regarding science as a religion,
because people can have faith in the 'ultimate' theory of the scientific
method, and its universal correctness.

I think most people associate religions with faith in an ultimate being or
beings, but is a God (or are Gods) necessary to a religion? I don't think I'd
make this claim, but I guess I could be persuaded... maybe. If that's the case,
science is definitely not a religion (at least not as I know it).

I tend to think, however, that religion defines a moral code for behavior. For
science, that moral code would be honesty, openness to new ideas, and full
disclosure. I guess that could define a weak moral code (it doesn't touch on
things like killing and theft etc., but a general behavior) so maybe that
qualifies. But are there other elements necessary to a religion? I'd say so,
but I can't really venture what a good set of rules for defining one would be
at the moment...

Anyway, I'm not sure what _I'd_ classify as a religion... Maybe you guys have
different views on what a religion is?
