I was always very confused by this when I was at school in the US. My US
Government class made a big deal of the 'separation of church and state',
yet we (well not me obviously, though I did stand for it) were expected to
recite the pledge every day. It boggled my mind that this double-standard
was so firmly entrenched.
Strangely over here we have a state religion, completely established with
religious representatives in the legislature, but very few people care
either way and we'd never get away with having any sort of pledge.
By the way Jeremy - if Dave! supports this it would make him a
disestablishmentarian not an antidisestablishmentarian.
