I just read this article on Wired.com, about a new bill to expand the DMCA:
http://www.wired.com/news/politics/0,1283,46655,00.htm
It will force manufacturers to place copy protection on all electronic devices
that deal with digital media. In addition, this supercedes Fair Use, and
sounds to me like it would be illegal to say, make mp3s of all your CDs for
personal use. Also, creating or selling devices that do not have such security
devices would be illegal. There is also a fairly disturbing "Anti-trust
Exemption" in the draft bill. You can read the draft here:
http://cryptome.org/sssca.htm
I think what I find most disturbing is the fact that this would limit how a
person is allowed to enjoy such digital media, and to an extent what media they
CAN enjoy. If this bill is passed, it may mean that imported CDs, DVDs, and
video games won't work on new players, and acquiring foreign machines could be
illegal, as well. What is everyone else's take on this?
