Hi all,

I tried to post the message below to lugnet.off-topic.clone-brands last
night, but had to wait for approval, so I posted a copy to the Bloks Forum:

http://bloks.hyperboards.com/index.php?action=view_topic&topic_id=1242

I've had some good answers over there so far, and I hope to hear from
knowledgeable people in this group too.

Thanks!

I recently got interested in LEGO and it hit me hard. I'm also a free
culture / open source advocate, so I'm interested in ways to "hack"
LEGO that, while not illegal, are not necessarily given both thumbs up
by TLG.

I'm very interested in clone brands such as Mega Bloks and Best Lock.
However, right now I'm more interested in learning about construction
toy systems that are compatible with LEGO, but are not very /like/
LEGO except in having a way to interface via studs, tubes, etc..

I was excited to hear about new LEGO-compatible bricks in K'nex
<http://knex.com>, as well as Sploids, which were designed to connect
LEGO and K'nex <http://sploids.com>. Tonight I had a long discussion
with John Braley, a friend who is knowledgeable about various
geometric building systems, and he mentioned that Ramagon
<http://ramagon.com>, which was popular in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, was
also compatible with LEGO. Note that K'nex and Ramagon are "hub and
spoke" types of building toy, like Tinkertoys, whereas LEGO is a
"building block" type. Sploids are blocks, but their only real purpose
is to act as an interface.

So, are there any more brands of construction toy, either today or
historically, that can interface with LEGO, but are not just LEGO
clones? For that matter, do you know of any construction toys that are
supposed to interface with /any other brands at all/? Bonus points if
they can interface with K'nex, Sploids, or Ramagon. :)
