My personal favorite among those are the high quality Berli Bygge Brikker from
1955. Unlike the Lego of those days, the Berli bricks has kept both their colors
and their form (no warping) during the last 50 years.
I have a couple of the Polly sets, and the best feature from that company are
the small studs-only bricks that allows you to put two bricks together
bottom-to-bottom; in that way, Polly avoided the cost of making mirrored slopes,
as they just used a normal slope attached upside-down (talk about SNOT
building!).
