MONTERREY, MEXICO -- International toy company LEGO® A/S of Billund, Denmark,
renowned for its interlocking plastic bricks, is investing $100 million-plus to
expand its plant near Monterrey, northern Mexico, its only manufacturing
operation in North America.
Pablo Salazar, senior director of LEGO Operaciones de Mexico SA de CV, told
Plastics News the money will be fully spent by September 2011.
The company, he said, has already invested $300 million in the plant, at the
Nexxus Industrial Park, municipality of Ciénega de Flores.
The facility opened in March 2009, and supplies markets in the United States,
Canada and Mexico.
The new investment will be in buildings, equipment (machines, feeding systems
and so on) and laboratories (quality, machining and maintenance), Salazar
said.
LEGO has 182 plastic injection machines in Ciénega de Flores, primarily Engel
and Arburg units with clamping forces ranging from 40 to 120 tons, he said.
LEGO Operaciones de Mexico employs 1,200 at the complex and is expected to take
on more staff.
According to Salazar, LEGO chose Mexico, and specifically the Monterrey area,
because of low annual employee turnover, high supplier density, access to
qualified human resources (technical and management level), good infrastructure,
including roads, airports and utilities, and because Monterrey is less than a
days drive from the LEGO distribution center.
LEGO was founded in 1932.
