I was purusing eBay this evening and found this:

I find it hard to believe that people are willing to pay $56 for 8
mini-figs.  Is there another one in this lot that is as rare or in demand • as
the Forest Wench?

Wow! I think those prices are absurd.  There always seem to be some sets
of minifigs going for much more than other sets with similar figures. I
have never paid more than $3 per Imperial Soldier figure, but I've seen
them go for way more than that.

I think impatience contributes a lot to some of the absurd prices we
see. People want an item very badly, so they bid high. If two of them
are competing, the price gets driven up to a little more than the lower
price. The next time the item comes up, only the person who didn't get
it the first time is still looking for one, so it goes for a little more
than the lower price that most people are paying. Once he is satisfied,
the market returns to the typical price. Of course markets are complex
and this is a gross simplification, but probably is the basic mechanism
which generates outrageous prices.

The Forest Wench commonly sells for between $20 and $30.  Knights and
Forestmen commonly fetch $5 each on eBay - so it adds up to $55 -$65.  Seems
about right (for eBay prices).  I have seen lots of mini-figs (those in
6071) sell for higher prices than complete 6071s with instructions and box
more than once on eBay.  Pretty crazy, eh.  I guess mini-figs are demanded
on eBay.
