8277 ("XXL" set or "yellow robot") comes in a very large (and flimsy) box.
It is in a lot of ways like the UCS boxes, light cardboard, and IIRC, flaps
that could theoretically be peeled back (but usually just rip).
There is an inner box to the set which is also marked 8277. It must have
been an early attempt to make things juniorised. The parts in that inner box
build a gearbox or mechanism (or torso) that several of the models use. It
has separate instructions, and the instructions in the outer box refer to it
as a complete assembly.
In hindsight this was a very poor packaging decision on LEGO(r)s part, in my
view... the inner box looks exactly like a salable item.
I speculate that someone before you returned an open box, or just the inner
box, or there was some pilferage in the stockroom.... Since the inner box
looks like a set box by itself, it may have been placed (back?) out on the
sales floor by itself.
I would go back to TRU and plead that they accept the return. Unless you
paid less than 15 USD or so for it in which case you got a soso deal instead
of getting the short end of the stick.
