At the local Wal-Mart I frequent (in Richmond, VA), the HP sets were not so
much a part of a disappearing act as they were a part of a "find the pea
under the shuffled shells" act. My W-M keeps moving the sets all over the
place.
For the first few days that they had them, the HP sets were displayed on a
cardboard display stand just inside the front door. Within a week, that was
gone and when I looked in the toy dept. I noticed that it looked like it was
being re-organized. I walked around checking things out (I like to wander
all the aisles of the toy dept. occasionally because this W-M sometimes has
old LEGO stock up on the very top shelfs) and eventually found the HP sets,
not in the LEGO section, not in the HP section, but all piled up on the very
top shelf over in Barbie Land! They didn't even have them within reach of
the customers!
I assumed that this was just temporary until they cleared space for them
(but still consider it poor retailing) and yes, a few days later they were
back down in the regular shelves over with the other HP-related toys - not
with the LEGO section. This seems to be a common practice with retailers
such as w-M or Target. At least that's what I've noticed around here.
The sets have definitely been selling-at least the small and mid-size ones.
I'd also like to think there might be some left over for Wal-Mart clearance
sales. I'm not going to count on it though.
