[Crossposted like mad. Follow-ups to lugnet.general, 'cause it was most
general]
I was in the Wal-Mart on 28th Street in Cascade Michigan yesterday. The
shelves along the entryway (opposite the optometrist) were full of LEGO!
Even better, they were full of LEGO on sale![1] The Egypt and Amazon
Adventurers sets, the '99 Ninja sets, and Spaceport were all there. And
surprise, surprise, surprise! The basic/classic Advent set! Woo-hoo!
Lots of them, for $16.00 each!
And there, at the end of the entryway, was a larger-than-life-size[2] R2-D2
model! An amazing construction, mixing the regular bricks favored by
master modelers, along with special pieces. It was wonderful. I
especially like the brown 2x2 round bricks used for the cables going from
his feet to his body (but I think they used string to hold them together).
Unfortunately, they cheated and used a glass lens for his eye. :(

1- It's possible this is the same sale Larry P. mentioned.
2- OK, maybe he's just life-size and on a pedastal. It's all kind of hazy,
now...
