There appear to be some (undeclared?) volume discounts on Power Functions
at shop.lego.com (at least in the US).
For some parts---notably including the rechargeable battery, the motors,
and the variable speed remote control, but very notably not including
the IR receiver---a quantity of four or more gives a
10% discount, while a quantity of eight or more gives a discount of 15%.
Since these items are barely available individually outside S@H (I think I
saw the PF motor bundle at the Big Store at LLCA, but never at Brand
Retail) and thus never on sale, this seems like a big deal, especially for
train clubs wanting to make a jump to battery power (in the experience of
PSLTC, the rechargeable battery is good for about four hours, so you need
at least two fully charged each day for even a six-hour show---at $50
apiece. . .). Also note that the PF extension wires are included in this
discount. . .which start at $3. . .and, incidentally, can adapt old 9V to
PF. . .
