OK, some actual data.
I once bought these -- all listed as 50% off regular price -- this is actual
data from the receipt:
--- -------- ------------------------------ ------- --------
Qty Item # Description Price Total
--- -------- ------------------------------ ------- --------
16 leg0282 Star Wars: Snowspeeder $9.99 $159.84
16 leg0285 Episode I: Lightsaber Duel $2.99 $47.84
8 leg0286 Episode I: Droid Fighter $2.99 $23.92
20 leg0287 Episode I: Naboo Swamp $5.00 $100.00
--- -------- ------------------------------ ------- --------
Subtotal $331.60
Shipping:
Standard 3-8 Business Days $20.00
Premium 3-5 Business Days $35.00 <---
Express 2-3 Business Days $50.00
Total (with Premium Shipping) $366.60
So, I got 60 LEGO sets for $35.00 shipping ($.58 per item). If I'd wanted,
I could have paid $20.00 for shipping ($.33 per item). Note that $20.00 is
6% of $331.60, and it came straight to my front door.
A crummy deal or a good deal? You be the judge. :-)

p.s. I agree that buying only one or two small items doesn't turn out to be
a great bargain.
