Has anyone ever put an advertisement in your local newspaper looking for
Lego?  Any comments about your experience or thoughts on doing something
like this?  I am considering trying to do that, but I'm unsure what would be
the best way to word such an advertisement.  I've tried garage sales, but I
am never able to find any Lego.  I'd rather (like everyone here I guess) to
buy someones old Lego at a 'garage sale' type price.  What I'm trying to get
at, I think, is a way to word an advertisement to buy people's Lego that
they would otherwise have sitting in an attic or at a garage sale.  Did that
make any sense to anyone?

I have thought about it but decided against it because the moment anyone knows
you want LEGO badly enough to advertise in the paper for it the price will go
up.  Also you'll probably have people calling you saying they've got this
really great collection of LEGO, but when you drive over there you find that
it's in really sad shape or it's a clone brand.  And if that happened to me and
it was some kid who really thought it was worth something, I'd probably be
suckered into buying it.  Plus, it costs money to advertise in the paper.

As far as garage sales go, I usually find the best times are very early (before
someone else spots the bargain) or very late (chances are they've been priced
too high for non-AFOL's, but you would be able to tell if it was worth it).
And it is much more tolerable if you go to garage sales also looking for stuff
other than LEGO because sometimes you can go for weeks without finding any.

Sometimes you buy someone's collection and it is missing obvious stuff from
sets you recognize like baseplates, etc.  I've considered having "business"
cards made up especially for those situations to leave with the people
requesting that they call me if any more of their collection turns up so I can
buy it also, but I just haven't got around to doing it.

First off, I'm not sure if this is the correct newsgroup for this, but I wanted to start here. Has anyone ever put an advertisement in your local newspaper looking for Lego?
