My condolences on the loss of your hard drive.

Unfortunately, color photocopies can't reproduce all of the fine detail and
shading that original laser prints create. Plus, they are excessively
expensive (It's bad enough that I have to charge what I charge for my kits,
but that would be too much straight into a third party's pockets).

I should also say that I'm not planning on shutting down production of my
kits, but will be discontinuing (at least temporarily) all those affected by
yesterday's events.  It is possible that the data could be recovered and I
am going to pursue this right away.  I do have several back ups of the
original designs, which could be made into instructions again at a later
date, providing I find the time to to them.  It should be understood that
building kits is only a hobby and I would rather invest my energy on the new
kits, then go back and recreate the old ones.  Maybe, if the Blacksmith Shop
is selling well enough, Lego Direct would see fit to re-issue the rest of my
castle sets, but right now I'm gearing up for an all out Blitzkreig on WW2
armor.

Have I learned my lesson?  Yes, I'm going to get nmyself a better back up
system for my instructions....

Can't you just go to a copy shop and make some color copies of the ones
you've got? The quality won't be perfect, but I would be surprised if
someone who hadn't seen the original would know the difference. They'll
certainly be good enough to put together the model. It seems kind of drastic
to shut down production just for this.

Hello Folks!

I'm sad to announce that a sudden crash of one of my hard drives wiped out
what appear to be the only copies of the final layouts for my custom kit
instructions.  The original .dat files are all backed up and intact, but the
final layouts files are what is needed to print up more instructions for my
kits.  I'm going to send the drive into a shop, but from my own preliminary
diagnostics, the damage seems pretty fatal.
Since each set of instructions represents between 20 and 80 hours of labor
for each one, I do not plan to recreate any of the lost works, especially
considering most were in their final run or already sold out.  Fortunately, I do
have some print copies on hand of most of the instructions, for which I will
still sell the kits until these run out.  I will hold onto the parts for the
other completed kits, but if I can not recover the layout files, then I will be
forced to part out my own kits!
I've gone through my inventory on Bricklink and changed the available sets
to match what I have for instructions. Sadly I must say that I do not have a
single set of instructions for my Corsair fighter, so that may be sold out for
good now.  I did raise the prices substantially on all of my remaining stock,
which is intended to help me recover some losses this will incur. I still do
this as a hobby, but I need to make back a fixed amount from each set in order
to make back they cost me!
Worst of all is I only have 5 more sets of instructions for my Guarded
Church, which means the total production run will be only 13 sets!  The first 10
kits are already paid for, but there are 5 more people on the waiting list (2
more than I will be able to make kits for).  I'm going to postpone figuring out
how to make a decision as to who gets one of the last three kits, until after I
know for sure if the layouts can be recovered.  I can already say that if the
anser is no, then the Guarded Church will be the shorted lived kit I've done!
Also, my set owners' database was last backed up on March 2nd, so I am
missing most relavant info (who owns what) since then.  Any help filling in the
blanks would be appreciated.
My web site files are also among those lost today, so please be patient
while I download, update, and upload the pages to relflect today's events.  The
inventory on my Brickbay store is as up to date as I can be at the moment, so
please go there to see what's left and see which limb(s) you'll have to amputate
to get it:
http://www.bricklink.com/store.asp?p=brickmania
My future release plans will not be effected by this disaster, other than
the likelihood of no more expansion modules for the Guarded Church.  My .dat
files are all backed up as will the layouts for the next kits...
Sprry for the trouble,

Dan Siskind, Jester to the Court of Brickmania
