I like the ideas, especially the dump station.

I am thinking of maybe using the white droid DDK microscout
one a tipper car, and the blue Scout on the side of the track.
When the Scout sees a car is next to it, it sends VLL led
messages to turn the microscout on and off, tipping the car.
The droid microscout is smaller, only 6 studs wide,
so should fit on a train car better than an RCX.
You would need two cars, one for the microscout, one for
the tipper car, connected by a universal joint.

Can an RCX power the train tracks?  It would be nice to
slow down/stop the train when it gets near the dump station.

Any ideas for an RIS controlled train display?

How 'bout a layout with:

   1. RCX-controlled level crossing.
   2. RCX line follower whose path goes through the level crossing.
   3. RCX-controlled train with a few tipper cars.
   4. Soccer ball mine with an RCX-run loader that puts balls in the cars.
   5. RCX-controlled dump station that empties the tippers.

There are some non-trivial problems in this project,  which should make it
interesting for the display.  But, a lot of the work on the sub-projects
can be done independently.  And the line follower and/or level crossing
could be dropped without much damage if there's not enough horsepower to do
everything.

I have some doubts about the feasibility of coordinating the RCXs.  Anybody
got experience getting them to communicate with one another?

(...) I was thinking about a train of 3 or 4 cars, with an arm controlled by the Scout doing the tipping: stop the train with the first car in position, trigger the Scout, wait for it to run the dump cycle, advance to the next car, etc. The process (...)
