Commission seeks artists to design library’s space

VISUAL ARTS: The San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture is sending out a call for an artist or artist team to design a new educational space at the Serra Mesa-Kearny Mesa Branch Library. Its purpose will be “to benefit children ages 0-5 and their parents.”

An artist-led team for this project can be multidisciplinary, meaning it can include architects, landscape architects or others from relevant fields. The qualifications also say that the chosen artist or artists will need to collaborate with an expert from one among several fields related to education or social services. (Among those listed are child education, child development and mental-health care.)

The new library branch itself is scheduled to open at 9005 Aero Drive in July. This educational space will be part of a second phase of construction.

Applications – which consist of a request for qualifications, not an actual proposal – must be received by June 7 at 4 p.m. Artists working in any form are eligible and can locate the needed forms at www.sandiego.gov/arts-culture/publicart.shtml. Questions about the process can be addressed to Dana Springs, the commission’s public art program administrator, at (619) 533-3051 or at dsprings@sandiego.gov.
