profundities...

LEGO like other toys has been in decline in the UK for some years.

In my area (thames valley) things arent quite so bad.

I can fill-in a bit more with regards to the Thames Valley,
more specifically Bucks.

Woolies in High Wycombe seems to be purging their stock of
Lego. Despite price guarantees, there seems to be less and
less.

Also in High Wycombe there is a Beatties, which has a pretty
good stock of Lego, and occassionally has sales. For their
current sale, virtually no Lego is on sale, though. Beatties
was also pretty good in that they had quite a high number of
2000 sets on the 27th of December. Their stock at the moment,
though, seems to have taken a bit of a hammering. Not a lot
there! (Beatties, if you remember, was the store that blew-out
a large number of Technic CD subs for 15 quid, as well as a
number of other sets)

The Tesco in High Wycombe town centre occassionally has a good
stock of Lego, and recently had a sale of sets, with 33% off
a number of 1999 sets, though most are usually small. This
Tesco I understand is closing in the Summer, due to a compulsory
purchase order, for some unknown project.

Nearby, in Amersham, is an Entertainer. (Amersham is also the
address shown for the online arm of the Entertainer. I don't
know the feasibility of getting things available online through
the Amersham shop, though). This used to be a Lego Construction
Centre, with half the shop devoted to Lego. The shelf space
devoted to Lego is quite a bit less, now, but still offers a
good variety of sets, if just a bit over-priced.

There is also a smaller Entertainer in Beaconsfield, and a
similarly-sized one in Uxbridge, but I haven't visited either
in quite a while.

There are also 2 branches of Childs, one in High Wycombe (but
in a back street somewhere, nowhere near the High st), and
another, quite small one, in Hazlemere. Regularly pop into
the Hazlemere one, as I can walk there, but over-inflated
prices, and the availability isn't that great.

There is also a TRU in Hayes, near Heathrow. Outside the
Thames Valley, I know, but an interesting diversion for
a lunch break, as I work quite nearby!

(...) In my area (thames valley) things arent quite so bad. Entertainer, Camberley or Reading - did decline but seems to have got more shelf space back at xmas, but mainly to the large amounts of discontinued sets. They have all the 2000 stuff, but (...) (24 years ago, 29-Jan-00, to lugnet.loc.uk)
