Well, I think he'd be welcome back in .loc.au as he is an extremely helpful
member of our community here. I think that we'd as a group like to see
auction and sale posting allowed in .loc.au. [We'd REALLY appreciate our own
.marketplace] so we don't have to endure these postings for items we may
want, only to recieve an e-mail in reply, saying that 'I forgot to mention I
only sell/trade/?? in the US'. If you're going to prevent someone trying to
let those who may be interested in an item from publishing information about
an auction/sale in that forum, you should also do something to prevent this
'false advertising'
[If someone says they want to trade, then they should be willing to trade
internationally. If they want to trade in the US then they should clearly
state that they are only be willing to trade IN THE US. If something isn't
done to stop this [1] then Paul Baulch's comments about lugnet being 'US
centric' will start to ring true..ie that it is turning away from an
internation site and into a site that seems to cater specifically to the US
[2]
The main problem we have here is that quite a lot of auctions and
sales/trades in the .market area are aimed at a particular country(s) and
this is often not stated in the posting. I also believe I've seen posts in
various groups asking for parts to complete sets when this should be placed
in .market instead. Mark may [I cannot guarantee anyone's behaviour] be more
likely to post 'correctly' IF a way could be found to re-organise .market so
that it ONLY caters for internation sales/auctions and that sales/auctions
for a country/region are ONLY posted in that country/region, or else they
are CLEARLY labelled in the subject that the item(s) are only available in
whatever region. Similarly, an auction that is aimed squarely at train
collectors should, if [and ONLY if] international, be allowed to post ONCE
at the start of the auction in the group that the auction is aimed at, in
order to let those who may have interest in it to see what is available. I
agree that posting updates should be stopped in themed forums [eg. fabuland,
trains], but I see no reason why they should be prevented in say .au IF the
auction was solely open to Australia/the australian region [Aus/NZ/PNG], but
not if an international auction.
Finally (for now), I'd once again like to either have permission for posting
of sale/auction info in .au OR a .au marketplace set up so we don't have to
wade through postings for numerous US only trades/sales/auctions [esp. EBAY]
where the 'only in US' piece of information is CONSTANTLY not posted. [which
leads one to think that lugnet is aimed SOLELY at the US]
[1] If someone offers a trade and then turns around and refuses to trade
[inc. buy, sell, auction bid] with someone because of some reason not
clearly stated in the posting [other than already having arranged for/sold
the item] then they should be treated in a similar way to that in which Mark
was treated..Posting rights revoked [Although specifically in .market, and
not everywhere else].
[2] I seem to remember you saying something about announcements of sets on
sale NOT being valid posts in .general, yet they are still appearing, with a
general emphasis on US sales. [see message with subject: 'Roboriders in
local K-Mart' in .general [being on a mail subscription, it's not easy to
get a message number] I would have thought that a forum like .general should
focus on information of interest to everyone around the world, not the few
who happen to live near said store. I believe that while you tolerate
postings like this, posting of auction information on say a fabuland auction
should be allowed in the fabuland forum, as it would have a much wider
appeal there than an add for a sale at some store in the US would for people
in Australia/NZ/Europe/wherever.
