Note. Coles/Myer shareholders will also get their usual discount
off the clearance prices.

Kerry, what is the discount and how many shares do you need to own and does
it apply across the board.

Currently you have to have 500 shares, although there was recently a
rumour that it will go up to 1000 shares. Coles Myer shares are selling
at $6.50 per share at the moment, so it will cost about $3250 for a
parcel of 500.

Discounts:

3% off at Bi-Lo
5% off at Coles, Liquorland, Officeworks
7.5% off at KMart, Target, World 4 Kids [if you can still find one]
10% off at Myer (but lower discounts on certain items e.g. electrical)

See:

http://www.colesmyer.com.au/invest_info/share_card.htm

for the complete list of Coles Myer companies and the applicable discount
as well as the fine print.

If you just do your regular shopping in Coles, Bi-lo, Myer, Grace
Bros, Target, KMart etc, then the discounts will save you a lot over
time. Remember too that discounts aren't taxable in any way (unlike
dividends) and that discounts are applicable to your after-tax dollars
so the effective rate of return before-tax can be even higher (depending
on your marginal tax rate).

The effect of the share scheme is that Coles Myer have thousands of small
shareholders who own exactly 500 shares, like me :-)

Although the rules say that you might not get the shareholder discount
on "special promotional events", I cannot recall ever being refused the
shareholder discount off an already discounted price.
