Custom kits are labour intensive to produce and it's expensive to source parts, so they tend to be pricey for what you get, unless it's a great design ;^) So does there need to be fundraising before the fundraising ? Of course, I have two custom sets sitting right in my house right now, much more pieces involved, this is why we will go for the right design with the right price in mind and with the right kind of pieces used!
