http://www.lego.com/info/pressspecific.asp?PressReleaseId=151&Year=2000
-----------------
Today on 29 November, a new 12,000 square metre LEGO factory was officially
inaugurated in the Czech Republic. The factory is situated in Kladno, only 20
kilometres west of Prague. LEGO Company has invested more than 50 million DKK in
this project. Already now, the factory has 70 Czech employees. They assemble
LEGO elements for various LEGO construction sets and construct LEGO models for
the LEGOLAND Parks.
LEGO Company has chosen Kladno because of the very central location in Europe -
a fact also pointed out by President and CEO Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen in his
inaugural address. This is an important step for LEGO Company. In Kladno, our
Global Supply Chain now has a central production facility in Europe, and based
on the good infrastructure we shall be able to better supply both the
established markets in the West and the rapidly growing markets in the Eastern
part of Europe, said Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen.
Started in year 2000
Already at the beginning of the year 2000, LEGO Company established a temporary
production in Kladno. On 6 March, 5 employees began constructing their first
LEGO models. Today, the present 70 staff is all working in the new factory only
a few hundred meters from the old LEGO building. This building will be used
for the development of new models for the coming LEGOLAND Parks, says Anders
Ravnskjær, Managing Director of the Kladno factory.
175 employees
The number of employees is expected to increase gradually to approximately 175
employees in the course of 2001. The present building with its 12,000 square
metres will accommodate between 300 and 400 employees based on full utilisation
of all opportunities for evening and night shifts. It is also considered a great
asset for the LEGO Company that it is possible to draw upon fully qualified
labour in The Czech Republic. Another great asset is the substantially lower
level of cost," says Anders Ravnskjær.
