Dear TLG,
Please would you redesign the Power Functions Train Motor 8866 with lower
gearing.
I ran some tests with various train loads, comparing performance of the 8866
motor with the 9V train motor 10153.
An 8866 motor in the Emerald Night carriage is too fast to run with a PF medium
motor in the engine cab (swapped for the usual XL motor because top speed was a
bit low). The carriage pushed the engine and caused derailment.
Two 8866 motors plus PF rechargeable battery and IR receiver in the Emerald
Night carriage on a flexi-track layout would not move at PWM speed settings 1 &
2, ran OK at speed setting 3 and ran too fast, derailing on the corners, at
speed setting 4.
I fitted the 8866 motors to a larger carriage, with more adhesion weight (hence
better traction). The speed regulation was poor compared to 9V train motors.
With the 9V motors I could get all the way round a looped-eight layout (with 1
in 30 slopes) at speed setting 4 but the 8866 motors needed setting 5 for up
hill and setting 3 for down hill.
I added 2 more carriages and the 9V motors were still OK with speed setting 4
all the way but the 8866 motors needed top speed up the hill and caused the
battery to cut out 3 times. They also ran away down the hill at speed setting
4, derailing at the bottom.
In summary the 8866 motor has poor speed regulation because it is over-geared by
a factor of two. Please would you redesign it in order to save the future of
Power Function trains. Thanks,
Mark
