Some of Fremont family’s stolen LEGO recovered from stolen truck

FREMONT, CA — A late-night phone call brought good news to Mark and Jannet Benz
- some of their stolen museum-quality LEGO have been found.
About two weeks ago, the Benz family had about $6,000 in LEGO structures stolen
from their pickup truck after the pieces had been on display in Palo Alto.
Someone broke into the truck on Feb. 3 and took all of the creations, which Mark
Benz spent several years constructing to look like San Francisco landmarks such
as Ghirardelli Square and the Conservatory of Flowers.
Then, about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, the Benz family received a call: Some of the
LEGO had been recovered, Jannet Benz said.
Mark Benz went to the Fremont Police Department a short while later to identify
and collect some of the pieces, which apparently were recovered from a stolen
vehicle found by authorities in Castro Valley.
“The Ghirardelli (sign) was there, but the Conservatory of Flowers was in
pieces,” she said.
Her husband brought home a box of miscellaneous blocks but left some of the
larger, intact structures with police so they could investigate the case
further, Jannet Benz said.
For the most part, the family is happy to have some of the plastic building
blocks returned.
“It’s disheartening some of it is coming back in pieces, but he’s just happy be
can start working on them again,” Jannet Benz said of her husband.
Mark Benz, 49, has been a LEGO fanatic since he was a child. He is a member of
the Bay Area LEGO Users Group, which often participates in showcases
highlighting some of the members’ creations.
Benz’s structures were shown at the American Heritage Museum in Palo Alto, CA in
late January.
He plans to rebuild some of his structures in time for the Bricks By The Bay
convention slated to be held April 9-11 in Fremont, CA his wife said.
