I don't want to cover the whole window with cardboard or sheet rock :)

Mark,
If you go to Lowe's or Home Depot, ask one of the people there about window
film.  You'll find it in the window treatment section where blinds and the like
are.  You'll find varying shades of tint and UV protection. All you need is the
installation kit (usually about 6-8 bucks, which is a spray bottle, utility
knife, and squeege for application.  It's very easy to install, I did it on some
windows in my house.

Second, is to buy some blinds from same type of location.  Just measure the
width of the window at the top, middle, and bottom to determine the size you'll
need, and then the height at left, middle, right.  You may not need to get a
custom size.  Height of the window isn't that important.  If you have a window
that's say..40 inches tall, you can get blinds that are 42 inches long.  There's
usually a way to take those 2 inches out of the blind--instructions for that are
usually included with the blinds.

I have blinds in my LEGO room, and it works quite well.  I also installed a
ceiling fan to keep air circulating in the room.
