I'm not really sure if this qualifies as a Find of The Month (simply cause a
lot of $$$ was involved), but to me it was an awfully good deal.  So there
was this eBay auction with a very sparse description to say the least:

"Thousands of dollars in Legos for a fraction of the price. A great deal for
any Lego Maniac. Over 120 sets all with instructions in like-new
condition. NOT ASSEMBLED!!! High bidder pays shipping. Good luck and happy
bidding."[1]

I emailed the guy and didn't get a response back.  Not a good sign, but I
find it's about 50/50 odds that people will actually respond back.  When I
was looking at this lot it was at $300.  I was tempted but there was also
another auction going on that I was interested in[2] that was going for
around $800, which I considered a good price still.  But then it ballooned
way past what I was interested in bidding for and sold for $1525.  I was
sad.  I really wanted to re-establish a LEGO stockpile like I had from my
youth (I still haven't related my tale of woe regarding what happened to my
old LEGO collection).  Garage sales weren't cutting it (have never found
anything).  So I bit the bullet and gambled on the validity of the words in
the auction description.  I figured I couldn't go too wrong with 70 lbs of
LEGO, even if it was mostly plain building blocks.  I think I did pretty
good.

Here's the set list (based on the instructions I got) from that lot I won:
1477, 1478, 1479, 1480, 1481, 1547, 1596, 1611, 1624, 1632, 1786, 1789, 1793
(x2), 1906, 1974 (x3), 4010, 6009, 6016, 6018 (x4), 6020, 6034 (x2), 6034,
6038, 6043, 6044, 6054, 6057, 6075, 6078, 6081, 6082, 6085, 6115, 6195,
6235, 6236, 6245 (x2), 6246, 6248, 6254 (x2), 6257, 6262, 6264, 6265, 6266,
6274, 6334, 6338, 6340, 6342, 6348, 6350, 6387, 6401, 6402, 6482, 6512,
6516, 6525 (x2), 6529, 6535, 6537, 6544, 6546, 6581, 6593, 6594, 6595, 6639,
6649, 6660, 6664, 6665, 6669, 6670, 6679, 6755, 6811, 6813, 6814 (x2), 6831,
6832, 6833, 6834 (x2), 6835 (x2), 6850, 6851, 6852, 6877, 6878 (x2), 6879
(x2), 6879 (x2), 6887, 6889 (x2), 6895, 6896 (x2), 6897, 6898, 6923, 6933
(x2), 6956, 6957, 6959, 6981, 6983, 6988, and 8818

Lotsa stuff there including castle and pirate (which I'm most interested
in).  Here's the kicker: the LEGOs are in great shape.  I've only come
across a few broken pieces in this huge lot (I'm still sorting 'em out).
Also, there's stuff in there that's definitely not listed above.  I've found
3 classic space torsos for instance.  I feel like a little kid in little kid
heaven.  All sorts of pieces I've never seen before.  And tons of minifigs.
I have a ZipLoc quart-sized freezer bag nearly filled with mini-fig heads
(the previous owners had almost all their figs in pieces).  I can't wait to
build some of these sets.

So to finish the story off, the owner lives in McKinnleyville, CA and I live
in the Bay Area.  My girlfriend and I drove up there, picked up the LEGOs,
camped on the beach south of Eureka, and just overall had a pretty cool
time.  I'm still a bit giddy about it all, although my housemates thinks I'm
completely nuts.  I'm just glad my girl doesn't mind my freakishness.

huzzah,
Micah

(...) Good for you! We don't seem to mind it either, at least as far as the Lego goes ;-) As a sidenote, there's an unofficial SF Bay Area Lego club. Come visit us! Our site is improving all the time. And we have a meeting coming up, with a date yet (...) (25 years ago, 8-Jul-99, to lugnet.general)
