Someone asked about a 1960's LEGO Idea Booklet on Bricklink today, so I thought
I would post it here as well...

It's about #238:

http://guide.lugnet.com/set/238

#238 LEGO Building Idea Book is the most varied of all LEGO books/booklets.
There are 9 main versions to this booklet, with the 2 of the versions coming in
many languages. I think that in total (with the different language variations,
there are about 36 different versions.

I did a "CUT/PASTE" from the my LEGO Sets/Parts History CD - Chapter 24 - "LEGO
IDEA BOOKS AND BOOKLETS (1955-80)", subchapter "24.3 #238 LEGO Building Idea
Book Variations (1960-68)". The website pics are from Eric Strand and Horst
Lehner's website. Here is everything you ever wanted to know about #238
(produced from 1960-68).

Enjoy!

============================================================================

Continental Europe #238 (1960-62) Building Idea Book 1 – Version-1 (#238/1).

VERSION 1 was the first version of #238 to come into production. It had the
common blue cover, with a globe design and all the Lego country flags. It was
first produced starting in 1960, and had 36 pages. It was printed in at least 12
language variations. Each booklet is in the local European language (in 2
languages for Switzerland and Belgium). They are known in the local language
as “Building Idea Book 1”. German and Austrian booklets are identical (both
German).

There are many pages of Lego models, including the Town Plan. The major
difference between this version of #238 and the next continental European
version (version 3) is that this older version has no Lego wheels and no black
bricks among the Lego designs.

This version of #238 measures 9 ½ inches x 6 ¼ inches (24 cm x 16 cm) and has 36
pages.

USA/Canada #238 (1961-64) Building Idea Book – Version-2 (#238/2).

Version 2, known simply as “Building Idea Book” was sold in the USA starting in
1961, and in Canada starting in 1962. It had the common blue cover, with a globe
design and all the Lego country flags. There are many pages of Lego models,
including the Samsonite version of the Town Plan. There are no Lego wheels or
black Lego elements in any of the pictured models. The Canadian book appears to
be identical to the USA book, with the exception of the addition of French text
(in smaller letters) below the English text on each page.

This version of #238 measures 9 ¼ inches x 6 inches (23 ½ cm x 15 cm) and has 16
pages.

Continental Europe #238 (1962-63) Building Idea Book 1 – Version-3 (#238/3).

Version 3, the 2nd continental European version of #238, came out around the
same time as Lego wheels and black Lego elements, which would be in 1962. It had
the common blue cover, with a globe design and all the Lego country flags. Like
the earlier continental European version (Version-1), this version came out in
at least 12 language variations. Each booklet is in the local European language
(2 languages in the case of both Switzerland and Belgium). They are known in the
local language as “Building Idea Book 1”. German and Austrian booklets are
identical (both German).

There are many pages of Lego models, including the Town Plan. Even though this
version has Lego wheels and black Lego elements in the Lego models, the front
and back inside cover pictures of Lego parts available in the early 1960’s still
does not show either wheels or black elements.

This version of #238 measures 9 ½ inches x 6 ¼ inches (24 cm x 16 cm) and has 36
pages.

Britain/Australia #238 (1962-64) Building Ideas Book No.2-Version-4 (#238/4).

Version 4, the 2nd British/Australian version, came out around 1963. It had the
common blue cover, with a globe design and all the Lego country flags. The major
difference between this version and the earlier version 1 was that this version
had Lego wheels, and a different name (Building Ideas Book No.2), and only had
16 pages, versus 36 pages for version 1. There are many pages of models,
including the Town Plan. Because black Lego bricks were not sold in
Britain/Australia until 1963, this version still had no models with black
bricks. This version also has no small plates displayed. Those were not
available in Britain until 1965. The only difference between the British and
Australian versions of this booklet is that the Australian version lists a price
on the cover, whereas the British version does not.

This version of #238 measures 8 ½ inches x 5 ½ inches (21 ½ cm x 14 cm) and has
16 pages.

International #238 (1963-65) (no title) Idea Book – Version-5 (#238/5).

Version 5, the “International” version of #238, first came out around 1963.
Because more countries were selling Lego (42 countries by 1965), the number of
languages that this book would have to be produced in was becoming unmanageable.
So, TLG decided to replace the older language versions of #238 with this
international version of #238. It had the common blue cover, with a globe design
and all the Lego country flags. There was no longer any writing of any kind
throughout the book. There are many pages of models, including the Town Plan.
Many models are still the same as older versions of #238, although with the
introduction of small Lego plates, new models with plates are displayed in this
version. The Lego element pictures on the inside front and back cover of the
older versions of #238 were replaced with a diagram of each part, and the number
of the parts pack that each part was available in, as well as the colors
available. The same “International” version of #238 was sold in all non-English
speaking Lego countries. This idea book version was sold in continental Europe,
Britain, Australia, and USA.

This version of #238 measures 9 ½ inches x 6 ¼ inches (24 cm x 16 cm) and has 36
pages.

USA/Canada #238 (1964-65) Idea Book – Version-6 (#238/6).

Version 6, known simply as “Idea Book”, was sold in USA/Canada starting in 1964.
This book no longer had the blue with globe and Lego flags design on the cover.
The cover design was reminiscent of the 1964-65 Samsonite Lego catalog. There
are many pages of Lego models, some that appeared in the earlier version 2 of
#238. The Town Plan is no longer shown in this book. As in the version 2 #238,
the Canadian book appears to be identical to the USA book, with the exception
that the Canadian book has writing in English and French. No version similar to
version 6 was produced for either continental Europe or for Britain/Australia.

This version of #238 measures 9 ¼ inches x 6 inches (23 ½ cm x 15 cm) and has 16
pages.

Continental Europe/Britain/Australia #238 (1965-66) – Version-7 (#238/7).

Version 7 was a complete departure from earlier #238 versions. It not only no
longer had the blue with globe and Lego flags design on the cover, but was no
longer rectangular. The Town Plan is no longer displayed in this version. This
version of #238 was square in shape and had a white cover with several Lego
photos, and a large question mark on the middle of the cover. This version came
in 2 variations. One variation, for a few continental European countries, had no
text. The variations for Britain/Australia had English text throughout, and had
“Building Ideas Book No.3” printed on the cover. No version similar to Version 7
was produced for USA/Canada.

This version of #238 measures 7 ¼ inches x 6 ¾ inches (18 cm x 17 ½ cm), and has
28 pages.

Germany/Austria/Switzerland #238 (1966-68) – Version-8 (#238/8).

Version 8 is a German language version of the #238 book, although without the
blue cover with globe and Lego flag designs. On the cover is a boy playing with
a truck with trailer made with large Lego wheels. The book has the German title
“So Bauen Wir Mit Lego” (This is How We Build with Lego). This German language
booklet was sold in Germany and probably Austria. It may have been sold in
German speaking parts of Switzerland as well, although this has not been
confirmed. No version similar to Version 8 was produced for USA, Canada,
Britain, Australia, or the rest of continental Europe.

This version of #238 measures 10 1/4 inches x 7 1/8 inches (26 cm x 18 cm) and
has 30 pages.

USA/Canada #238 (1966-68) Idea Book – Version-9 (#238/9).

Version 9, known simply as “Idea Book”, was sold in USA/Canada starting in 1966.
It is very similar to the 1964-65 version 6, except it has fewer pages. Many of
the models shown in the earlier version are also shown in this one. There are
also Lego motor and Lego gears shown in this version, not shown in the earlier
one. As with the version 6 #238, the version 9 #238 Canadian booklet appears to
be identical to the USA book, with the exception that the Canadian book has
writing in English and French. Also the back pages showing the parts pack sets
would be different for USA and Canada. No version similar to version 9 was
produced for either continental Europe or for Britain/Australia.

This version of #238 measures 9 ¼ inches x 6 inches (23 ½ cm x 15 cm) and has 12
pages.
