Has this been going on for years and I just haven’t noticed, is it a new thing, or are these just particularly well-lit and edited photographs?

I’ve noticed this as well, in growing frequency on packaging as well as the catalogs. Like Disney, I think TLC has decided to forgo traditional artistic venues and concentrate their efforts in the CGI realm.

During a PennLUG group trip to Toys R Us, we noticed the CG renders on one of the small vehicle kits. We thought based on the picture, that there would be clear (trans-white) rounded slopes used for the windshield, when it was actually a smoke (trans-black) rounded slope, just rendered poorly. (Thanks to Mike for spending the 4 dollars to verify our suspicions!)
