Yesterday the news came in that our local LEGO shop recieved their first
shipment of the new Batman sets. Today, my wife ran down and picked up a couple
of sets for me.
Set 7779 - The Batman Dragster: Catwoman Pursuit
I'm not overly impressed with this set, but for $10 it's worth it for the
minifigs alone. You get Batman in the grey suit, and Catwoman, complete with
whip. Catwoman's head is also two-sided, with a nice female face on one side,
and silver Catwoman eyes on the other. The set itself has no printed parts.
Istead there is a set of stickers to add the bat symbol to the slopes.
Catwoman's bike is a dark purple version of the police motorcycle that came out
a while back. The dragster has two wheels on the back, and a castor wheel on
the front for steering. Overall, I don't see much play value with this one, but
my daughter went crazy when she saw Catwoman, so it was well worth the price.
The instruction book includes a picture inventory of parts.
Set 7781 - The Batmobile: Two-Face's Escape
This set rocks! Again, no printed parts (well, there is one slope with a
control panel on it), but stickers instead. This is a good thing if you're
looking for parts. The set is split into numbered bags. Bag one is a gate and
a set of road spikes(?). Bag two is Two-Face's truck. The truck is 6-wide and
pretty stocky looking. It reminds me a bit of an armored bank truck. Bag three
(actually two bags) is the Batmobile. This model has to be one of the best ones
that I've seen in a while. There are lots of curved slopes, a nice set of
wheels, and a projectile launcher that makes up the front of the vehicle.
Before I even opened the box I told my wife that I'd have to buy at least one
more of these to keep at work. Compared to other minifig-scale vehicles, the
Batmobile is big and heavy, but I think it works well, and it looks awesome.
Overall, the entire set has a lot of great play value. The vehicles are nicely
done, and you get three minifigs (Two-Face, with funky hair, a generic thug, and
Batman in black suit and cape). The best part of this set, other than the
Batmobile, are the Bat-toys. There is a set of shackles, a few boomerangs, and
a couple of modernish guns. Personally I love the tommygun. I can see a few
prohibition-era mocs using it in the future. As far as I'm concerned, this set
was well worth the $30 price tag, and I can't wait to get my hands on a couple
more.
I think this theme will do well, based on what I've seen in these two sets. I
know I'll be buying more.
