I suppose that the thik version should be more difficult to find (because it
comes just from one set), but BrickLink’s price guide says the opposite. The
thin version (the most common) is really expensive (about 2$) and the thik
ones rather cheap...
Besides this fact, I own both 6971 and 6985 (all original) and they don’t
have any black helmet with thin chinstrap!!! All have the thick one!
Now my question: is Peeron really right or, as I think, the “thin” and
the “thick” were exchanged???

More likely, if I remember right, the inventory data was never re-verified for
correct thin/thick versions of the part.
(Again, IIRC) When the Peeron data were recorded, no one was paying attention
the thick/thin variation -- the entries were for part 193. Later, part 193 was
split into 193a (thin chinstrap) and 193b (thick chinstrap). At that point, the
majority of inventory entries were set to use part 193a.
Another thing that can complicate the picture is that typically/historically,
when LEGO switched to a new version of a part, there would be a period of time
when both the old and new versions of the part were available. Different copies
of the same set might have different versions of the part.
Anyway, it’d be great if you can submit your information about sets 6971 and
6985 to Peeron, so they can update their database.
