Eric Strand brought this EBAY auction item to my attention.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5953609253

It is an early Lego spare parts pack for Lego windows/doors from 1954-56.  And
it looks quite interesting.  The windows/doors are the variety made from 1949-56
without glass.  The windows/doors can be seen used in the picture on the box.
And on the side of the box it says in Danish "Lego Windows & Door - 700 c".

However, what the winner of this expensive EBAY auction doesn't know is that
these are not the original windows/doors to this set.  In 1954, TLG came out
with a 2nd variety of windows/doors that are the forerunners of the classic Lego
windows (1957-87), and pretty much look exactly like the classic Lego
windows/doors, only taller.  These early classic style windows were 1 brick
taller and had no studs on top, only "handles" in the side of the windows/door
that allowed them to be attached to the slotted Lego bricks of the era
(1949-56).  These windows are NOT compatible with Lego today.

These "slotted classic tall Lego windows" were available from 1954-56 as loose
individual windows/door available in the mid-50's as:

700 C/1 - 1x6x4 Panorama window with glass - 0,50 Danish Kroner.
700 C/2 - 1x6x3 3 Pane window with glass -   0,45 Danish Kroner.
700 C/3 - 1x6x3 Shuttered window with glass -0,45 Danish Kroner.
700 C/4 - 1x4x3 Window with glass -          0,40 Danish Kroner.
700 C/5 - 1x3x3 Window with glass -          0,35 Danish Kroner.
700 C/6 - 1x4x2 Door with glass -            0,35 Danish Kroner.
----------------------------------------------------------------
TOTOAL                                       2,50 Danish Kroner.

The #700/C Windows/Door with glass spare parts pack (the EBAY auction item)
contained one of each of the above in this box, and it too sold for 2,50 Danish
Kroner.

One other item not correct about this box is that why is there such a big (long)
box for so few windows and a door?  Answer:  from 1949-56 most Lego sets of the
era had a cardboard box insert to hold the windows/doors in place.  This set is
missing that cardboard insert.  Starting in 1955-present, most spare parts packs
have all Lego contents loose in the boxes.  But not this and a few other early
50's spare parts packs.

The windows/door that were (incorrectly) put in this box were known as #700 B.
And one could have purchased them individually (just as with the 700 C above) as
items #700 B/1 thru #700 B/4 (there were only 1 door and 3 window types in this
"glassless" window variety).  The set #700 B, would contain these 4 pieces,
ironically in the same boxtop design as the #700 C shown above.
These glassless #700 B windows were also much cheaper than those with glass,
with a price between 0,13 Danish Kroner down to 0,08 Danish Kroner each.

When my Lego CD is finished, then you too can prevent from being blindsighted in
old Lego auctions.  Just remember one thing about Lego basic sets and spare
parts packs from 1949-65. "WHAT IS ON THE BOX TOP HAS ABSOLUTELY NO RELATIONSHIP
TO WHAT IS INSIDE".

(...) Here is a 1x6x4 window along with an excerpt from the 1953-54 Danish catalog showing the piece. (URL) Eric (20 years ago, 7-Feb-05, to lugnet.general, FTX)
