Hey all,
The big day where we all gobble the gobbler is almost here, and I've
composed a few lines of thanks that I'll be reading when my family sits down
to dine. Before I get to the text, you'll need a little backstory first.
This will be our first thanksgiving without my paternal grandmother. She
was the last living relative on my father's side and so he has requested a
totally traditional meal with all the trimmings as his way of honoring her
memory.
I miss her very much as well and I got to thinking that the occasion
deserved some succinct and well-chosen words. I thought this might take me
awhile, but I finished rather quickly. I wanted to address family concerns
as well as larger world issues. I present the text below to share with all
of you as a gift of thanks to this community for its diversity, humor,
optimism and boundless energy:
Yours in Peace,
David Simmons
We are thankful for coming together today even though everyone cannot. We
hope that one day everyone can.
We are thankful for everyone who has shared our table over the years.
Whether friends or family, we are thankful for how they have touched our
lives with grace, humor and love.
We hope that one day everyone can have a place to call home that they can
share with friends and family because there is no greater joy than the sound
of many voices joined in laughter.
Finally, we are thankful for all the times to come when we shall meet again,
and whether you like meats or beets, let's all sit down together!
