I was just working on the CD on the other computer.... and here are a few more
tidbits for those who might be interested in purchasing one when it comes out:

1) A chapter of 18 pages devoted to the 1:87 scale (sort of Matchbox size)metal
wheeled small Lego cars and trucks from the 50's and 60's.  And though no USA
catalog shows them, some were available in the USA (I purchased 4 from a local
retailer when I was 9 years old).

2) Discussion and catalog/box pictures of extremely rare (probably only found in
the Vault in Billund) prototype classic windows and doors from 1957.  Originally
TLG toyed with the idea of classic window 3 bricks tall (instead of 2 bricks
tall), and classic doors and picture windows (1x6x3) that were 4 bricks tall.

3) Why was USA Samsonite Lego often of poor quality?  Why it looks like there
may have been an acrimonious divorce between USA Samsonite and TLG in 1971-72.
These and other reasons might explain why TLG doesn't use 1961 (Samsonite begin
date), but instead uses 1973 (TLG begin date) for celebrating Lego in the USA.

4) Lego catalogs (on both side of the Atlantic) had many inaccuracies from
1957-72, especially the years from 1957-65. I will point out corrections.

5) Display catalogs from Denmark, Germany, Austria, Britain, and USA Samsonite
and Canada Samsonite (from 1957, 1958, 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966,
1967, 1968, 1970) with an invitation to add them to Brickshelf.  And the rarest,
a 1970 USA Samsonite Retailer catalog, also will be shown.

5) Sets that never made it to a Lego catalog: #271, #510, #536, #5235.

6) The mysterious #238 Building Idea Book (1960-68), the first idea book that
Lego ever produced.  If you had all languages and versions (1960-61, 1962-63,
1964-65, 1966-68) you would probably have over 20 different ones.  And yes, even
though no catalog ever shows it, #238 was available in (Samsonite version)
USA/Canada.

------------

I do have a question about copyrighted material.  I assume I would need TLG
permission to display early catalogs in scanned form (although probably not in a
photographed form).  Does anyone know how far back the copyright laws cover
print material?  I've heard 17 years and 25 years, and recently I understand
that changes to copyright laws protect some things for 99 years?? (Hence the
Disney copyright of Mickey Mouse movies going back to the 1930's.)  Any ideas?

(...) Don't forget Samsonite #005 - Discovery Set. (unless you've seen it in a catalog since our previous discussions). Eric (20 years ago, 1-Jul-04, to lugnet.general)
