The Design Lab is an internal group at the LEGO Company who is responsible
for overseeing the “system” aspects of everything the LEGO Company does.
They’re the ones that maintain the element library, element history, “own”
the element design process (working with others in the company), own and
guide the growth of the element library (ensuring the element selection
doesn’t get out of control like the late 90s), own the color palette, and
many other tasks. Basically, they work to ensure that the system works long
term, and is the most robust, consumer (kids and adults) friendly it can
possibly be.

Jake, is there any chance of you being able to feed ideas for new elements into
the Design Lab?

I have ideas for at least fifty parts, some of which I have been forced to make
myself, due to their necessity for the models I've been building.  Some of them
are so universally useful that I've made tens of them!  I am sure that the most
useful ones are consistent with the Technic system.  They are small parts that
would fill in gaps in the line-up of parts and give Technic modellers more
versatility.  I'm not into big chunky useless parts - in fact I avoid sets with
them in!

At the moment I am only able to cut and file existing parts, but often they are
the only operations required, since some of my most useful parts are shorter
Technic pins and odd length axles.  I have recently been a bit more adventurous
in my quest for a shorter universal joint, and I wouldn't expect those to be
produced until I had the best possible design to submit.

The company has much better facilities than I do and could make the parts more
consistently and with a smoother finish.  I would like to get some of my best
parts produced officially so that the whole community can benefit.

I'm sure the Design Lab produces quite a few new parts each year that are never
released into sets.  Could we AFOLs vote for these extra parts to be produced
and made available in packs?  An example is a half-straight of 9 volt track,
which appeared in an early photo of the 4512 train set.  I could use about 100
of these!

Also, there are some extra large models that are produced by the designers, that
have been featured in the Lego club magazine and other places in the past, that
are too large to have been released as sets.  Such large models would make a
great challenge for us.  An example is the four-tracked brown vehicle driven by
the hooded creatures that sold R2D2 and C3P0 to Luke Skywalker's guardian in
Star Wars.  I think that model was a bit bigger than the Imperial Star
Destroyer.

(...) I personally have the need for 100 "Plate 2 x 2 with 1 Stud". This piece would be analogous to the normal "jumper" plate: basically a 2x2 tile with a single stud smack-dab in the middle. (Don't worry, I won't patent it, if it isn't already. (...) (21 years ago, 15-May-04, to lugnet.lego, FTX)
  Too bad there aren't blueprints.....

(...) There are a lot of Miniland models (all the sail and power boats, and the combine harvester, and the cable car) that could make TLC a lot of money if they would just create blueprints and sell the plans.... Paul Sinasohn LUGNET #115 (21 years ago, 18-May-04, to lugnet.lego)
