All LEGO bricks are designed to have a 'draft'; they're very slightly narrower
on one end than the other to help get the brick out of the mold.
I examined some 1x2 bricks fresh out of the brand-new 4496 tubs tonight, and
discovered that all of the bricks do not have the same draft design.
In my tub, the orange 1x2 bricks all have the hollow center tube. The orange
bricks appear to have a symmetric draft. When stacked one atop the other, I can
feel a slight raise when I run my finger over the stack, on both sides.
The medium blue 1x2 bricks all have the solid center tube. When stacked, they
have a draft only on one side. It's easy to turn the bricks until the brick
joins are smooth to the touch, and the adjacent edges nearly disappear.
I don't consider this any sort of defect; just a very subtle effect that might
lend itself to an interesting detail. However, comparing the height of the stack
of the orange and medium blue bricks reveal that they are slightly different
heights; the 16 blues are about a width of a hair taller than the 16 oranges.
