I wondered about some numbers, so I consulted Peeron:
Those named above are 9 most used colours (minus the 'new' word, of
course). These account for 91% percents of parts used in all sets.
Original Gray is #2 (15.4%), DkGray #7 (3.9%), Brown #9 (1.5%).
Note that these numbers are for all inventoried sets, so they're not
perfect.

Introduction dates:
Gray - 1962 (42 years)

Many people have asked what colors are currently considered "universal" or locked. This means that these colors will almost certainly never be changed. Universal colors are colors that we consider to be untouchable for change. While the final list (...) (21 years ago, 6-May-04, to lugnet.general, lugnet.lego, lugnet.announce) !!
