Jake,
Thank you for the information on the color change.
I think the biggest feeling I have is disappointment. Things like this just
serve as reminders that Lego is a corporation like any other, and prone to the
same misguided, goofy decisions that plague other companies. It reminds us that
the product we love is still entrusted to marketeers in a conference room who
are prone to making bad decisions. Every time it looks like maybe there are
real fans of the product in Billund and not just Ivory Tower Executives,
something like this comes along.
The color change strikes me as change for the sake of change. Its like when
companies spend millions on makeover projects whose only result is that the
corporate logo will now be drawn in italics. A lighter shade of gray will
somehow fit better with Legos image? And you can say that with a straight
face?
After 20+ years of classic gray, someone looks at it and says Oh, this is too
dull colored. Thats what the problem has been all along!
I guess my final comments (questions, really) would be:
Of all the things you could be working on, all the things to help the company,
the brand, the product as a whole, this is what you spend resources on?
Do you really believe that a consumer passing by a shelf will now stop and
linger a bit more because your gray is a shade lighter?
Do you really believe this will help sell more Lego?
