Folks, most viruses that spread via e-mail these days, particularly the
worms that plague people on Microsoft systems (Klez, et al) will not falsify
the return address. In other words, you can't believe who it says it is from.
When Klez or any of the similar worms infects a system, it pulls a list of
e-mail addresses from the computer (from address books, other mail messages,
archived webpages, newsreaders etc) and sends itself to every address on
that list. It also typically picks one of those addresses at random, and
falsifies the From field of the e-mail header so that it appears to be from
someone else.
Always make sure you have a good virus scanner in place, with up-to-date
definition files, and check frequently with your software manufacturer for
security updates, patches and fixes to help minimize the damage a virus can
do (do this more often if you use Microsoft products.)
Getting virus e-mails is not uncommon, all it means is that someone who has
your e-mail address also has a virus. It doesn't mean someone is
deliberately sending viruses to AFOLs at all. Keep your protections
up-to-date, and don't otherwise sweat it.
